Visiting the Eye Doctor

by: Kathryn Dawson
Find Best Eye Care Treatments

There are a few different types of eye doctor. I thought it would be helpful to write an article with definitions and explanations of all the different types of doctor and professionals associated with eye care. Everyone should ensure they have an eye doctor who they have regular check ups with. From the age of 50 the eyes can start to deteriorate. Cataracts are more likely to develop and a range of other conditions can materialise. If you make regular appointments with the eye doctor then they will be able to spot a problem immediately and begin treatment. If you can catch something early on then there may well be eye drops or small injections available that mean you don't have to undergo surgery at a later date. Anyway, here is a list of the different types of eye doctor.

An ophthalmologist is the person who we would generally refer to as the "eye doctor" because they are medically trained. They have to not only receive all the medical training that any other type of doctor does, but they must then go on to specialise in this area, receive further training and undertake a number of years gaining experience. An ophthalmologist is licensed to diagnose and treat all conditions of the eye. They can carry out all laser eye treatments too. There is another name for an ophthalmologist, and that is an oculist, although this is not such as commonly used term. Anyone with the job title of oculist can diagnose and treat eye conditions and carry out eye surgery.

An optician is also a health care provider associated with the eyes. Although they are not trained like doctors in medical school, they are regulated professionals who have to maintain standards of training (equivalent to a BSc degree) and of practice. In the UK they are regulated by the General Optical Council and qualified with the Association of British Dispensing Opticians. They are primarily focused on carrying out eye tests in order to be able to prescribe glasses and contact lenses. They may well notice additional problems with the eyes when carrying out eye tests, but are unable to make a diagnosis or carry out any sort of treatment. If an optician notices anything wrong with the eyes then they will suggest the patient goes for a check up with an ophthalmologist.

Another professional that works with eyes is an optometrist. Whilst they haven't gone to medical school like a doctor, they will have taken a 3 year degree plus a year of supervised work plus assessments before qualifying and registering with the General Optical Council. They are able to go further than an optician in terms of examining eyes. They carry out eye tests to examine refractive problems such as long or shortsightedness. Part of their role is prescribing glasses and contact lenses and discussing options for treatment. If the eyes of their patient are affected by disease or conditions such as cataracts they will refer the patient to an ophthalmologist. There is considerable training necessary to become an optometrist, although medical school is not required.

Finally there is an ocularist, a professional who creates and fits artificial eyes. For example a patient may have lost an eye due to an injury. An ocularist will create the prosthetic eye and then train the patient how to handle and care for it. The artificial eye is usually custom made for the individual.

It is imperative that you have regular eye tests. Ideally you should visit the ophthalmologist regularly, especially if you are over the age of 50, but when this is not possible at the very least you should have check ups with an optometrist. Catching a problem early can be the difference between having sight that remains good and having sight that gets very bad very quickly, and may even need laser eye surgery to put right.

There are a few different professionals that deal with the eyes, but the traditional eye doctor and the professional who can carry out diagnoses and treatments is an ophthalmologist. They can provide treatment for a range of diseases of the eye including glaucoma treatment, wet and dry AMD treatment and cataracts. They are also licensed to carry out laser vision correction surgery. There are other professional roles involved with the eyes which, although requiring qualifications, registration and ongoing training and professional development, do not require attendance at medical school.

Kathryn Dawson writes articles about Optegra, a provider of high quality ophthalmic services in the UK. Consult an eye doctor if you need advice on glaucoma treatment and laser vision correction. Treatments are personalised to ensure the best possible results.

Available Macular Degeneration Treatment

by: Kathryn Dawson

Macular degeneration is a serious condition that many people unfortunately develop in their eyes. Just like the rest of the body, the eye begins to age as the years tick by and as it does so, the macular part of the eye starts to break down. The macular is the central part of the retina and is the area where the fine detail of sight is formed so it is very important. As the macular degenerates blurred vision occurs. This is the often the first sign that something is wrong with the eye. Distorted vision is also a symptom and if either of these conditions occur you should visit your nearest eye doctor as soon as possible. The condition can be treated, but like all illnesses, the quicker it can be caught the better. If left completely untreated macular degeneration can lead to blindness.

It isn't completely accurate to refer to just one condition known as macular degeneration. In fact there is dry age related macular degeneration, and wet age related macular degeneration. Dry AMD develops very slowly and is caused by the light sensitive cells breaking down as described above. Wet AMD is much rarer and is more serious too as it is more likely to lead to complete blindness if not treated. This occurs when the blood vessels in the eye begin to grow at an abnormal rate. This growth forces the retina away from the eye wall and this detachment is extremely serious and will eventually lead to blindness. The signs of wet AMD are seeing straight lines as slightly curved and medical attention is vital immediately.

There are treatments available for both these conditions. Dry AMD is the much less serious condition of the two, and even making a few lifestyle changes can go some way to keeping the condition from worsening. Dry AMD occurs through the aging of the eye, so you can slow this down considerably by making your eyes more healthy and strong. This can be done through making healthy lifestyle changes and carrying out special eye exercises too. The condition can be slowed right down with simple changes to your everyday life such as these. Eating plenty of vegetables that are rich in vitamins and minerals is vital too.

When it comes to wet AMD there are a few choices available. If the condition is in the early stages then the eye doctor may well prescribe a course of injections with an anti-vascular endothelial growth drug. If the condition is too advanced or if these drugs do not help the problem then laser treatment may be able to stop the progression of the problem, although it cannot return vision that has been lost. Eye surgery is quick and painless and the recovery period is short. That makes it a viable option for many people. Whilst the cost of such a treatment was extremely high many years ago, today the price is much more affordable.

Because it is able to halt the growth of problems such as macular degeneration, laser eye surgery is extremely popular and has helped thousands of people across the UK.

Regular eye check ups are absolutely vital if you want to catch any problems such as this early on. As well as regular check ups you should also ensure you keep strong and healthy by eating the right foods and getting plenty of exercise. If your body is fit and healthy then the chances are good that your eyes will stay fit and healthy too.

There is a selection of macular degeneration treatment available and your eye doctor will prescribe that which is the most appropriate. Laser vision correction surgery is an effective way to restore sight and prevent the condition from worsening. Laser eye surgery can be used to treat other conditions too for example it is highly effective in cataracts surgery.

Kathryn Dawson writes articles for Immaculate about a specialist provider of ophthalmic services. Through their world-class eye care centres of quality, they offer the top clinical outcomes in a wide array of treatments such as laser vision correction, cataracts surgery and macular degeneration treatment.

Macular Degeneration - Causes, Symptoms and Treatments

by: Kathryn Dawson

There are a number of eye conditions that can occur that can negatively affect the quality of a person's life. It doesn't have to go as far as blindness or even partial blindness for a person to desire or need some form of vision correction. Ongoing glasses wearing or even blurred vision can be a nuisance and lead to everyday problems. The advancements in technology have been great in the area of eye care and so from relatively minor ailments to serious eye diseases and conditions such as macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, treatment is available. Here is a guide to some common eye problems, symptoms that occur and the treatment available.

Macular Degeneration

This is a very common cause of loss of eyesight. The full name, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is caused when the retina starts to fail leading to blurriness and poor vision. As with many eye conditions it slowly continues to worsen if left untreated, and may eventually result in blindness. Most cases occur when the cells in the macula that are light sensitive begin to break down. This is known as dry AMD. Wet AMD on the other hand is a rarer condition caused by the growth of abnormal blood vessels in the eye which start to leak. This leaking causes the retina to begin moving away from the eye wall causing swelling and gradual blindness. Sufferers of wet AMD begin seeing straight lines as wavy or distorted and at this point, it is imperative that a visit to a doctor at the nearest eye hospital is made.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetes begins to affect the blood vessels in the retina over time and anyone suffering from diabetes should be made aware of this and undergo regular eye check ups. When the blood vessels are affected, circulation is affected primarily and then the vessel walls becoming weaker. If leakage from the blood vessels occurs continuously then vision can become seriously hampered, often permanently. In the most serious cases of bleeding can cause scarring behind the retina which pulls it away from the eye wall causing full and permanent blindness.

Although both these conditions are very serious indeed, there is vision correction treatment available for both. Laser eye surgery has developed over the years and is now so effective that even the very worst vision can in most cases be at least partly restored. It is absolutely vital that regular eye check ups be carried out as the earlier a condition is diagnosed, the less likely any serious symptoms and problems will develop. Laser eye treatment is a painless and simple procedure with extremely high success rates. Patients enjoy a very short recovery period with vision usually returning just 24 hours to a couple of days after the surgery. To aid a speedy recovery, patients are required to rest their eyes following surgery which means doing nothing that puts strain on the eyes. It is becoming increasingly popular across the UK as this type of surgery is proving so effective at treating all types of eye problems and conditions.

Regular eye checks should be undertaken, particularly for those who have been diagnosed with diabetes or are over 50. Age takes it toll on the eyes and so in order to avoid any problems down the road, visits to the eye specialist every now and again are recommended. Diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, cataracts and glaucoma are eye problems that can occur and for which treatment is available.

So, eye treatment is available, for example, to those simply wanting to have their vision improved, known as vision correction, so that they can get rid of their glasses. Alternatively, it can be for patients suffering from the most serious of eye diseases such as those described above.

Kathryn Dawson writes articles for Immaculate about a specialist provider of ophthalmic services in the UK, offering a range of world class vision correction treatment for eye conditions such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.

Eye Hospitals can routinely treat most eye conditions

by: Kathryn Dawson

If you find yourself having problems with your eyesight, an appointment should be initially made with an optician to have your eyes tested. It could be that you may now need to start wearing glasses, or for those of you who already do, a change in prescription may be necessary.

Those who have problems such as cataracts and glaucoma will almost certainly require a visit to an eye hospital. Individuals that need to consult prior to having procedures such as laser eye treatment may also visit.

Laser eye treatment is now an everyday procedure; we see adverts for various specialist eye hospitals that carry out this simple surgery. You may find having laser eye treatment much more cost effective than regularly having eye tests, and buying glasses or contact lenses.

The eye doctors can help and advise the best course of action for you depending on the severity of your eye problem.

There are two types of laser eye treatment, LASEK and LASIK vision correction, and depending upon the results of the consultation will decide which one of these two treatments will best suit you.

One of the best advances in laser eye correction, and now used in many eye hospitals is wavefront optimisation. The wavefront analysis the eye doctor will perform will show all the imperfections and irregularities that will need correction. This also ensures that your laser treatment is enhanced to give the best quality vision possible.

The LASEK laser eye treatment is the ideal solution for those whose prescriptions are small, meaning there are only slight imperfections in their eyesight, or who have thin corneas. LASEK, which stands for laser assisted epithelial keratomileusis, works by loosening the fine surface layer of the cornea (known as the epithelium) with some eye drops and folding it back. The laser then reshapes the surface of the cornea and repairs any refractive problem the eye may have.

The epithelium layer is then folded back to its original position and will take a few days to heal. This healing is done without the need for stitching in a natural way. A bandage lens is then used to cover the eye, and stays in place for as long as the eye takes to heal, which could be up to one week after surgery.

LASIK laser eye treatment is used to correct more serious vision problems such as astigmatism (curvature difference of the cornea or lens), myopia (near or short sightedness) and hyperopia (long or far sightedness). LASIK, which stands for laser in situ keratomileusis, works by creating a flap on the cornea using a blade or laser pulse. The laser is then able to reshape the stroma part of the cornea permanently before replacing the flap.

LASIK treatment has several forms, and so this procedure may vary. Some very experienced eye doctors may be able to perform the Advanced Surface Ablation form of LASIK which has no need to create a flap of the epithelium. The recovery period for this type of surgery is much longer than other forms and can take several weeks to heal completely.

After LASIK surgery recovery is normally rapid and often by the following day vision is completely restored. The surgery itself is often performed within seconds as the laser works extremely quickly to correct any eyesight issues.

There are many eye hospital centres operating both in the UK and abroad and all have specialist eye doctors who can advise which treatment (such as laser eye treatment) is required, expected recovery time and length of time of the procedure itself. For those who need correction in both eyes, these are usually done with about a week gap depending on procedure. This is to allow time for one eye to recover and heal before operating on the second.

Kathryn Dawson writes articles for Immaculate about laser eye treatment and finding the right place to do it. Choosing the right eye hospital and eye doctors is the most crucial step toward taking care of your eyes and vision for optimum treatment and results.

Different Types Of Eye Doctor

by: Kathryn Dawson

There a few different types of eye specialists. Some are physicians, some are not but when you are suffering from eye problems or a condition that is affecting your sight, it is important that you understand the basics of eye care which includes information about the different eye specialists and doctors available. Most people have heard of an ophthalmologist, an optometrist and an optician, but fewer have come across an oculist or an ocularist. This article acts as a guide to all the different eye specialists who may be involved with your own eye care.

An oculist is actually another term for an ophthalmologist. They are medical doctors or physicians which means they have attended medical school. They are able to diagnose and treat all conditions and diseases that occur in the eye including carrying out laser eye surgery.

An optician is not a physician because they have not attended medical school. They mainly deal with prescribing glasses and contact lenses. An optician will generally have a shop where customers can go for a quick eye test and assessment as to whether glasses are necessary. The optician will dispense lenses to those who need them. They do not carry out invasive treatment of the eyes or provide medical prescriptions.

An optometrist is also not a physician, but they are licensed to examine refractive problems in the eyes by mechanical means. They have undergone many years training as optometrists but not attended medical school. They can perform eye examinations and prescribe glasses and contact lenses, but they are not able to use or prescribe any drugs. If your optometrist discovers a problem with your eyes they will refer you to an ophthalmologist.

An ocularist is actually the technician who creates artificial or prosthetic parts of the eye. When a person undergoes cataract surgery for example, the existing cloudy lens is removed and replaced by an artificial one. An ocularist makes the artificial lens.

Although all of these titles are associated with eye care, it is the ophthalmologist who is the official "eye doctor". They must undertake full medical training and additional training in the field of ophthalmology in order to become a licensed ophthalmologist.

The question to ask therefore is who do you visit when you want to have an eye test or you think you may have a problem? Well, you could go straight to the top and book an appointment with an ophthalmologist. You could end up waiting a while for an appointment however and if it turns out there is nothing seriously wrong then it could be a waste of time. If you are having problems with your sight then the best route is to head to your local optician who will be able to carry out a basic eye assessment and test whether or not you need glasses. They will be able to suggest an optometrist to you if you want to undertake further examination. This is the path most people take if they are only experiencing minor problems with their sight. If you are suffering from blurred vision or seeing lines that are wavy for example then you should book an appointment with an ophthalmologist as there may be something more seriously wrong.

You should regularly undergo eye tests throughout your life as catching a problem early means there is the greatest chance of getting rid of it before it does any serious damage. Regular check ups with an eye doctor are important and should occur at least once per year. If you are having trouble with your site, it may be caused by a minor condition such as blepharospasm or it may be something more serious that will require laser vision correction. Either way, regular check ups will be a big help.

Kathryn Dawson writes articles for Immaculate about choosing an, experienced eye doctor for laser vision correction or even treatment for uncommon eye problems such as blepharospasm, an uncontrollable and involuntary muscle contraction or twitching of the eyelid.

Eye Care

by: Mary Rose

The eyes are the window to your soul and therefore need special care and attention especially so, with increasing pollution and levels of dust and grime. While we tend to look after our skin and hair and other parts of the body, we tend to relegate eye care to the background. There are several simple and easy solutions to all problems related to eye care from relaxation to dark circles and crow's feet. The following tips provide you complete treatment for your eyes.

All you need to do is to set aside few minutes everyday for eye care. It will benefit you in the long run. You can then possess healthy and beautiful eyes devoid of crow's feet and dark circles around the eyes.

The first and foremost in eye care is the diet. Make sure that your intake includes plenty of fruits and vegetables specially the yellow ones like carrots, mangoes, papaya etc. All these are rich in beta carotene which helps to have healthy eyes. Spinach is also good for the health of your eyes.

Rest is vital in the eye care routine. It will not only refresh the eyes but also improve their efficiency. Therefore take adequate rest. Regular exercise is mandatory to improve blood circulation. It will supply enough oxygen for the perfect functioning of the eyes.Simple everyday eye exercise like closing your eyes gently for 30 seconds to relax them in between your work, rotating your eyes often to relax muscles and moving your eyeballs from extreme left corner to the right corner is good for maintaining healthy eyes. To prevent blurred vision follow this simple exercise. Hold a pencil at arm's length and slowly bring it towards your nose, keeping eyes focused at all times

The skin around the eyes is very thin and full of blood vessels, which makes it sensitive to changes in the body especially those related to retention and distribution of water. In most cases puffiness in and around the eyes is often noticed upon waking up in the morning. Mild puffiness is usually only a temporary cosmetic concern. However if puffiness is severe or persistent and accompanied by swelling of the face or other parts, it may indicate other conditions like thyroid or kidney diseases and calls for immediate medical attention. Even though puffiness is accumulation of excess fluid, when the body gets dehydrated, it stores water as a defense mechanism, which contributes to further puffiness. Therefore, drinking adequate water is an important part of eye care. Drink at least a liter of water to avoid any kind of puffiness in the eyes. Drinking lots of water helps to flush out waste from the body.

Avoid excessive rubbing of your eyes as the irritation caused due to rubbing or touching will only cause more puffiness. Instead just blink your eyelids. Blinking is a good massage and exercise to the eyes.Milk is a good and safe natural cleanser. Clean your eyes using a clean cotton ball dipped in milk. Rose water drops gives a good glow to your eyes. Castor oil application is good for your eye lashes and eye brows. It keeps them dense and dark.

Protect your eyes from sunrays during the peak daytime by wearing sunglasses. The usual home remedies like cold water compress, cucumber slices, tea bags, application of egg whites and grated potatoes under the eyes for about 10 minutes are effective. It helps to avoid under eye wrinkles and dark circles around the eyes.

Even if you have no complaints it's important to see a doctor and have a routine eye check up. The above eye care tips will ensure that your pair of eyes remains healthy and beautiful for a very long time.

Before your next meal, take a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and add a pinch of salt. Mix with a warm glass of water and drink up. You can do this before any meal.

2. Repairing and making healthier cells is extremely important to cure diabetes. And this flaxseed oil remedy has been shown to repair cellular membranes which will eventually accept insulin again.

All you need to do is combine 4 ounces of cottage cheese with 1.5 ounces of flaxseed oil and 1 ounce of milk into a blender. You can add your favorite fruits for a sweeter taste. Consume this shake daily.

3. Lastly, you should also try a remedy using alfalfa. Alfalfa is a common remedy for an assortment of diseases and you can also use it for diabetes. Because alfalfa is rich in vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, Alfalfa has also been shown to lower blood sugar levels.

Preventative Care is Best For Guinea Pig Health

by: Mike Andrews

As with any pet, your guinea pig depends on you completely for it's health and well-being. This article may help you by serving as a basic guide of guinea pig health care and give you an idea of what symptoms of illness to watch out for. Of course if you feel your cavy is sick then don't delay in getting him or her to the veterinarian for a checkup and treatment.

You can practice good guinea pig health by providing your cavy with preventative health care. Preventing illness is a lot easier, and a lot less expensive, that treating illnesses. Cavies are hardy little creatures and with good preventative health care they can have a long, healthy life.

Keeping Your Guinea Pig Healthy

There are some basic levels of care that you can provide your cavy to keep him healthy. Here is a list:

* Provide healthy, nutritious food and a plenty of clean, fresh water
* Make sure they have lots of room in their cage or hutch to run around, play, and get their exercise.
* Make sure they have something like a "nest box" where they can hide away if they need to
* If possible have two cavies - they love companionship and it really is best for them
* Make sure their cage or hutch is clean, dry, and away from cold drafts
* Make sure that their cage location is not subject to extreme heat or humidity
* Keep them in a quiet environment
* Give them fun toys, and specifically chew toys to keep their teeth healthy and trimmed
* Most importantly, give them lots of your attention.

Knowing the Signs of Illness in Your Pet

In order to recognize a sick cavy, it is first important to know how a healthy cavy looks and acts. A healthy cavy will have bright, clear eyes and a shiny coat. A sick animal will have a dull look in it's eyes, the coat will be dull and in poor condition, it may have patches of hair missing, and will look thin. A healthy cavy will act alert, have a good appetite, will drink water, will vocalize, play, and have normal urination and poop. A sick cavy will be lethargic, have no appetite, is not drinking water, may have abnormal posture, and is not having normal urination and poops.

Common Health Problems

Cavies can come down with a variety of bacterial and fungal infections, and parasites, which can cause problems with their eyes, ears, and digestive system. It is important to give your pet cavy a daily looking over to make sure they aren't coming down with something, because when a cavy comes down with an illness it becomes very fragile and it's health can deteriorate very quickly in a very short period of time.

* Dehydration: this can be caused by your cavy not drinking enough water, prolonged exposure to a hot environment, or from diarrhea caused by illness
* Dental Problems: Your cavies teeth continue to grow throughout their lives. Most dental problems can be avoided by giving your pet chew toys and feeding hard pellets which will keep the teeth trimmed. But sometimes your pet's teeth do not grow in proper alignment. If not treated this can be very painful resulting in your cavy's inability to eat and could actually result in starvation and death.
* Ear Problems: Ear problems can be caused by infection, parasites, or injury. Indications of ear problems include scratching, head shaking, tilting the head to one side, and loss of balance.
* Eye Problems: Eye problems are usually caused by injury, infection, or an irritating object in the eye. If your pets eyes appear dull, have a discharge, or he keeps them closed, then place him in a darkened room because the problem may be painful and make their eyes sensitive to light.
* Tummy Problems: If your guinea pig has diarrhea, or is constipated, it may be because he has a gastrointestinal bacterial infection, is not eating a proper diet, is suffering from stress, or is living in a dirty cage. Diarrhea needs to be treated quickly, otherwise it can quickly lead to dehydration and possibly death.
* Heatstroke: Cavies can overheat very easily if exposed to high temperatures. It will quickly become weak, unresponsive, and eventually comatose. Without immediate treatment it will die.
* Respiratory Problems: If you hear your cavy wheezing, sneezing, or otherwise having difficulty breathing you need to take these symptoms seriously. These symptoms may be caused by bacterial infection and your pet could develop pneumonia, the most frequent cause of death in cavies.
* Skin and Hair Problems: Sores, dry itchy skin, loss of fur, and oozing sores are all signs of skin problems. There can be a variety of causes of these symptoms including skin parasites, allergies, stress, and diseases. Your veterinarian will need to diagnose the exact cause.

Summary

Good guinea pig health starts with preventative care. A daily routine that includes handling your pet cavy so that you can give it an "examination" is a good idea. The earlier that you identify an illness in your pet and can seek veterinary care the better chances of cure and a quick recovery. Your pet cavy needs you - take good care of him!

Ways to Prevent a Pterygium

by: Kathryn Dawson

First of all it is important to answer the question, what is a pterygium? This is quite a rare condition that not a huge number of people have generally heard of. A pterygium is a raised bit of tissue that develops and grows over the cornea. It looks like a yellowish bump on the white of the eye. It is much more common in hot or tropical climates where eyes are subjected to greater exposure to the sun, although it can also develop from exposure to UV light from tanning beds. Although the condition is not very serious, it can cause redness of the eyes and irritation. Sometimes vision can be impaired although this is only in the more serious of cases.

Treating the condition begins usually with a course of eye drops. Artificial tear drops can also be used which will may help rid the eye of the problem. If the pterygium begins to move and start to enter the cornea then action will need to be taken in the form of a quick and simple surgical procedure. Surgery is perfectly suited to treat this procedure. Taking just a few minutes, the eye can be free from the irritation and problems caused by this condition. There is a very short recovery period, usually a patient will be back at work the following day and the chances of problems arising or infections developing are rare.

The best way to prevent a pterygium occurring at all is to always make sure you wear sun glasses when out and about. Sunglasses are in fact a legitimate medical aid. UV light is extremely damaging to both the eyes and the skin, so covering both up is very important. Sunglasses and a hat is the ideal summer get up - the hat protects your skin which keeps cancer and wrinkles at bay, and the sunglasses protect the eyes well. Make sure you use glasses that have a good UVA and UVB protection promise however, as some cheap varieties do not provide adequate protection against the harmful rays. It is not the light that harms the eyes, it is the UV rays that become absorbed by the eye. The skin around the eye is particularly susceptible to skin cancer too as it is very thin and contains a high volume of blood vessels.

Many sunglasses do carry labels claiming they absorb 100% of UV rays, but this is not always actually true. Cheap sunglasses are generally cheap because they do not have the correct lenses that are needed to provide the protection against UV. It is also imperative that adequate eye protection is worn if you are using a sun bed. The intense amount of UV rays emitted by a sun bed can be extremely damaging to the eyes so eye goggles must be worn at all times.

Good eye care is important throughout your life. Although a pterygium may not be as serious as other eye problems, it does indicate your eyes have been damaged. This may mean that eye problems in the future are more likely. To prevent this happening to you, invest in a good quality pair of sunglasses from the optician if necessary and eat plenty of fruits and green vegetables for good overall eye health. Developing a pterygium doesn't necessary mean eye cataracts will develop or even that eye treatments will be needed, but it is best to avoid taking this risk. An optician will be able to advise you on the right type of sunglasses to buy. Bear in mind that cheap sunglasses found on the street are unlikely to provide the UV protection your eyes need for good health, and your eyes and sight are too important to put at risk.

Kathryn Dawson writes articles for Immaculate about eye conditions such as glaucoma, eye cataracts and pterygium, which is a benign growth of the conjunctiva and requires one of the eye treatments that only a specialist eye clinic should undertake.

Acne Vulgaris, the 8 Stages of Acne, Skin Care, Adult Acne, and Scar Removal Options.

by: Stephen M. Seabrook

What is Acne Vulgaris? This is a medical term used to describe most cases of acne. It really isn't as bad as it sounds! Vulgaris doesn't mean that the acne is vulgar, only that it means that it is common.

Be aware that there are many factors that contribute to acne. First, research indicates a propensity for acne may well be inherited. Parents who had acne in their teenage and young adult years may have children who are likewise prone to having acne in their teen and young adult years.

Next, clogged skin pores are certainly a major contributing factor for acne out-breaks. When pores become clogged with an excess production of sebum and mix with dead skin cells or makeup that isn't sufficiently cleaned from the skin, problems start to develop. When skin pores are clogged, bacteria are produced and pus starts to form causing a pimple, a white head or a black head.

The most commonly accepted causes for acne are hormonal imbalances. Hormones in boys and girls may become unbalanced during puberty, during menstrual cycles, when starting or stopping birth control pills, during times of extreme stress, and at other times as well.

All of the above situations can cause the body to over produce a male hormone which causes the sebaceous glands to produce sebum. The sebum combines with dead skin cells to block pores and acne develops. So, basically, it still comes back to blocked pores.

Other causes for acne include a lack of vitamins, minerals and trace elements that the body needs to maintain a healthy skin. Vitamins A, E and B6 are especially important in maintaining healthy skin as are zinc, essential fatty acids (EFA), Chromium and Selenium.

Most diets of teenagers and young adults do not contain these vitamins, minerals, and trace elements in sufficient quantity to maintain healthy skin and to help prevent the onset of Acne.

Acne: The 8 Stages:

Full blown, Stage 8 acne doesn't usually develop overnight. Acne is progressive condition. Acne is one of the diseases that are so common that it is sometimes just disregarded as a serious problem...like the common cold. It has been estimated that 95 of people will have at least a mild case of acne at some point in their lives.

Acne, much like the common cold, is usually treated by the sufferer with over-the-counter medications that alleviate the symptoms of the disease in the belief that it will simply go away all by itself....eventually. And, it usually does but not always.

Most people throughout their life will have the occasional pimple, zit, white head or black head.

Although these pesky little outbreaks do seem to appear at the most inopportune times, they really aren't a serious problem that requires medical attention. A little over-the-counter acne facial wash to help prevent another outbreak will usually take care of the problem. It isn't a big deal. This kind of acne is referred to as Stage 0 and really nothing to be concerned about unless the acne progresses to subsequent stages.

Acne stages are graded from 0 through 8. Zero is the least severe and 8 is the most serious of the stages. The stages are as follows:

Stage 1: There will be white heads and black heads with some mild inflammation. The outbreaks will start to occur more frequently. Using products that contain Benzyl Peroxide are in order.

Stage 2: There will be some papules in addition to the white heads and black heads. Papules are skin lesions that are solid and raised but usually small. This is still considered to be a very mild case of acne. Treatment can be continued using over-the-counter products that contain Salicylic Acid.

Stage 3: Stage 3 is the same as stage 2 but with more frequent occurrences.

Stage 4-5: Pustules begin to appear. Now, it's time to schedule an appointment at a dermatologist.

Stage 6-7: Nodules and cysts are forming. Scarring is going to start happening at this stage. Your dermatologist will begin to take more drastic action.

Stage 8: Breakouts are almost continuous and include nodules and cysts. There are modern technologies that will help and your dermatologist will advise you.

Acne Skin Care:

As we know, our hair follicles secrete sebum. Sebum makes its way up the hair follicles to the skin pores where it lubricates and protects the skin. Sometimes there are oil glands which get overworked, get enlarge, and produce too much sebum. The sebum can get trapped in the hair follicle.

When this happens the pores get clogged and black heads or white heads form and the bacteria start to multiply at an alarmingly fast rate.

Once you understand this process, you can see the reasoning behind the advice about caring for skin that has black heads, white heads and pustules on it.

The first piece of advice about caring for acne infected skin is to never pick at the pimples. Don't try to pop them and drain them. This will not cure them no matter what anybody tells you. Popping them will only serve to make them worse...not better.

However, there are things that you can do that really will help.

The first thing you can do is to wash your face with a mild soap or a sulfur based soap. Wash your face with just your finger tips. Don't ever use a wash cloth as it holds germs and bacteria. Rinse your face with clean water several times to ensure you remove all traces of soap, and then pat it dry with a clean towel. Do not rub your face with the towel and never use the same towel twice without it being clean.

Take a good multi-vitamin and multi-mineral supplement every day and drink at least 8 full glasses of water (not soda) every day. The vitamins and minerals will supply nutrients that are absent from most diets and the water will help to hydrate the skin as well as to flush toxins out of your system.

If you use over-the-counter acne medications, be certain that you follow the directions carefully and that you use a good sunscreen when you are outdoors as some acne medications make the skin more prone to sunburn.

Adult Acne:

Acne is not just a problem for teenagers and young adults. Once a person survives the teenage years, you would think that they don't have to deal with the embarrassment of acne any longer, right? Well....not exactly.

The sad truth is that about 25 of women will have acne at some time in their 20s, 30s or even 40s. Although there has never been a real cause established, it is believed that most adult acne is caused by the same thing that causes teenage acne...hormonal changes.

A doctor will sometimes prescribe hormonal treatments that will clear a case of adult acne right up. As with teenage acne, adult acne is not caused by diet. Stress has often been cited as one possible cause of adult acne but that assertion has never been verified.

Treating adult acne is a bit more difficult than treating teenage acne. Adults have the concern of drying out their skin that teenagers don't normally have to deal with. Adults don't want pimples; but, they don't want wrinkles, either. A dermatologist should be consulted if the acne is long lasting or is severe.

There are many treatments that are available to adults who suffer from acne. Most of the effective treatments are only available by prescription. Adults should not use over-the-counter acne medications that are intended for the treatment of teenage acne. These products tend to dry the skin and adults need to be concerned about wrinkling as well as acne.

A case of adult acne is not a happy occurrence to say because those ugly bumps always seem to occur at the most inopportune times and while a teenager may be embarrassed by acne, an adult is even more devastated.

Fortunately, there are treatments and a dermatologist has a lot of weapons in his arsenal to fight adult acne.

Acne Scar Removal Options:

Life hardly seems fair sometimes! First, a teenager or a young adult must suffer through acne, treat it, and have to live with it...sometimes for years. Then the acne is gone; but, the scars are there as a painful reminder of the mental and emotional agony the acne sufferer had to endure.

You're right, life doesn't seem fair; but, acne is one of those sad facts of life that some if not most of us have to deal with. The good news is there is help; unfortunately, it isn't free or cheap!

There are two basic procedures that are used to remove ugly pits and scars left over from a bad case of teenage or young adult acne. Laser resurfacing is the least expensive of the two available acne scar removal procedures. Dermabrasion is the second procedure.

Laser resurfacing can be done in the dermatologist office instead of a hospital so that provides a much greater financial savings. A laser is used to remove the top layer of skin and also to tighten the middle layer of skin.

The dermatologist will use a local anesthetic to help reduce the procedure pain. It usually takes several days for the skin to heal after a laser resurfacing procedure is completed. Very often, multiple resurfacing treatments must be done to achieve the desired results.

The second procedure used to remove acne scarring is called dermabrasion. In this procedure, a rotating wire brush is used to remove the top layer of skin. The body continually produces new skin and the new layer will be smoother than the layer that was removed. It usually takes between 10 days and 3 weeks for the skin to heal after a dermabrasion treatment. Once again, multiple treatments may be required to eliminate the scarring.

Acne may seem to be a devastating condition but with proper skin routine, vitamins, and over the counter products, most cases will not be severe. Remember, proper cleansing goes a long way towards minimizing outbreaks, so don't be afraid to cleanse your face 5 - 6 times a day of more if needed.

Fight acne by being smart. Take as many preventative steps as possible to avoid situations that create the opportunity for acne to develop. If acne does afflict you, consult a qualified medical professional before deciding on a course of action.

Skin Care Essentials for Mature Skin: Look Younger Today

by: Julia Denham

There are a multitude of products labeled as skin care essentials. So how do you know which products are truly essential for looking younger? Here they are:

1. Water. As we age, skin becomes dryer and more prone to wrinkles. Drinking water provides the hydration you need to plump up your skin and look younger.

2. A healthy diet. Lean proteins, whole grains, fruits and vegetables are skin care essentials because they provide the nutrients your skin (and the rest of your body) needs to look and feel its best.

3. Exercise. Regular exercise, especially cardiovascular exercise, sends oxygen rushing to your skin cells, making them look more vibrant and therefore younger. Regular vigorous exercise also helps relieve stress, so you will be less likely to use other stress relievers, such as tobacco or alcohol, which damage skin.

4. Sleep. While you sleep, your body produces human growth hormone, which helps keep your skin thick and elastic, thus less prone to wrinkles. On the other hand, when you deny yourself sleep, your body produces the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol has been shown to break down skin cells.

5. Sunscreen. If you worshipped the sun in your teens, you probably regret it now because your skin is as dry and brown as leather. No matter what your age, always wear sunscreen when you go outdoors, to prevent any future damage.

6. Moisturizer. Use both a daytime and a nighttime moisturizer. The daytime version protects your skin from potentially drying environments while the nighttime version replenishes your skin while you sleep. There are many versions of these skin care essentials. The best ones have ingredients such as Vitamins A, C and E, aloe, alpha hydroxyl acids, glycolic acid and retinol.

7. Eye cream. The skin around the eyes is much more delicate than other portions of your face. It needs special treatment. Invest in a good quality eye cream and use it faithfully.

8. Exfoliator. A gentle exfoliator will remove the dead skin cells and toxins that make your skin look dull, lifeless and old. However, it is important to choose the right product because some products may be too harsh for mature skin.

9. Face masks. A weekly face mask lifts the skin, reduces wrinkles and is a great way to relax for a few minutes. There are many such masks available commercially or you can make your own. One easy one involves applying a beaten egg white to your face and leaving it there for 15 minutes before rinsing with warm water.

10. Proper eyewear. If you need corrective lenses (that is, eyeglasses or contact lenses), wear them. Not only will you see properly, you will prevent the wrinkles caused by squinting. If you are fortunate enough to have good vision, you should still wear sunglasses in bright sunlight, for the same reason.

11. A good dermatologist. A qualified dermatologist will guide you to more advanced skin care essentials you may need and away from other remedies that could ultimately do more harm than good.

These 11 skin care essentials will go a long way to helping you look younger and healthier. Try them today and start getting compliments.

Cataract Reversal Without The Need For Surgery; Can-C Eye Drops Present An Alternative To Eye Surgery

by: Leslie Burke

Can-C eye drops safely reverse cataracts and are approved by the IVP (Innovative Vision Products)for use on cataract suffering adults and backed by veterinarians for use on the common condition in senior dogs or canines. The new treatment avoids the need for surgical removal of cataracts and high priced private surgery while offering affordability and acknowledged proven results.

Dr. Mark Babizhayev Ma, PhD has patented a clinically trialled eye drop (Can-C)that has been proven to reverse cataracts without the need for surgery. It uses the raw material N-Acetylcarnosine to reverse the damage of cataracts by simply applying several drops into the eye each day.

Statistically the United Kingdom has over 500,000 cataract suffers waiting for surgery at any one time. Just one London Hospital carries out 250 - 500 cataract surgeries every week. Can-C N-Acetylcarnosine eye drops is a safe and effective way to treat cataracts without the need for surgery.

As expected people in the international market place saw the opportunity to capitalise on this breakthrough and started to offer similar products that came with very poor results. Dr. Babizhayev voiced his concerns by saying "these companies often reference my research in their marketing efforts even though they have no affiliation with me and are definitely not offering my proprietary N-acetylcarnosine (Can-C) formulation which the research was based upon."

Fortunately there is a simple way for consumers to Verify if they have purchased the "Clinically Proven Formula" because each product has the statement "Approved by Innovative Vision Products (IVP)." printed directly on the box!

IVP is a Pharmaceutical and Nanotechnology Development Company with a portfolio of patent protected innovative chemical entities, drug delivery systems, and unique medical devices to target specific biomedical applications. Do Not be fooled by random formulations and claims from other companies.

Remarkably the success is not limited to humans as Can-C eye drops are available for Canine or Dog cataracts too. Happily, many dog owners are using this product to effectively address their pet's cataract condition including veterinarians.

Jack Stephans DVM of Pets Best Insurance said "as a veterinarian I want to let you know that I am recommending N-acetylcarnosine (Can-C) for the treatment of canine or dog cataracts. After applying Can-C eye drops to my 15 year old miniature pinscher, "Skeeter", for one year, the cataract in his right eye has diminished! Your cataract eye drops are a modern scientific miracle for our pets."

Like Dr Stephans we all love our pets and would do most anything to help them enjoy their more senior years. Administering Can-C is safe, affordable and has no reported side effects backed by controlled clinical trials.

If you would like to read more about Dr. Mark Babizhayev, his research, testimonials or are a Physician, Veterinarian or Alternative Health Care Practitioner wishing to find out more then please visit the N-Acetylcarnosine (Can-C) Cataract Eye Drops website where there is detailed information and full scientific explanations on how Can-C works.
